Our Icelandic Horses

icelandic horse on blanket

When we got our first Icelandic horse, it was a real treat!  He was
short, fluffy, and calm; just as calm as could be.

We loved that horse!  But he died not long after; therefore it
started the hunt to find another one.  We could not live without

an Icelandic horse!

Our first Icelandic horse came to us as a fluke.  A neighbor,
an older lady, had one for years.  She had made provisions
in her will for her niece to inherit and take care of the
horse for the rest of his life.  At the time of her death,

the niece was in college and could not take the horse.  Since
we were neighbors and knew of her predicament, we took
Gnupur to our place.

He was such a joy.  I don't think he minded being alone;
that is, alone as he could be with some 4-H ducks, goats, and
a pig or two.  He became one of the family.

He was very kind to our autistic son, who sometimes could
be unpredictable.

Gnupur was not that old, yet he was not that young either.

His untimely death created a whole in our hearts as
well as our family.  We were determined to find another
Icelandic horse.

Yet... where to start?  One of the ladies in our 4-H group
was on a horse list on the internet with someone who had
a website about Icelandic Horses.  We were put in touch

with her.  She connected us with a lady who lives a few hours
away, Dianna Young.  Dianna helped us through the process of
finding another Icelandic.  She was always kind enough to help
us with any problems along the way.  We learned so much
from this experience!   And we will be forever grateful.

A big thank you to Dianna and her wonderful Piltur.

We found our horses, yes more than one, about six hours
drive from home.  A mare called Dokka, and her foal, Ari.
